Since we are snowed in, I figured it was as good a time as any to do my taxes. Doing taxes doesn’t put me in the mood for a post, so this will be quite short.
Rather than a rant, let me make two points:
- It may sound great, but Trump will not be able to get rid of the IRS. As I stated previously, it would take a 100 percent tariff on all imported goods to offset our income tax revenue, and that just isn’t going to happen. I’m fine with him cutting down the number of IRS employees. It’s not like they answer the phone in any case. How about some real reform, instead? Let’s have Musk upgrade their computer systems and congress implement a flat tax or a much simpler tax code. hat would allow them to eliminate many more jobs at the IRS and ease the burden on taxpayers.
- As much as I would enjoy getting a check for up to $5,000, I think refunding tax payers for the money DOGE saves is a bad idea and will just put the country in a deeper hole. Trump wants to refund 20 percent of the savings to the taxpayers, use 20 percent to pay down debt, and spend 60 percent on new programs. I think those priorities are backwards. He should use 60 percent to pay down the debt, 20 percent on bolstering Medicare and Social Security so they do not run out of money, and the remainder should be used for new programs, including producing more ammunition, missiles, and ships for the navy. The less money we low, the less interest we have to pay, meaning the more money we have to spend on actual programs that benefit the country and its citizens.
I expect to be back with a regular post on Monday.
