The mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion.

This article from Zero Hedge goes into detail on why Pakistan might turn to nuclear weapons in its battle with India.

The only good thing about a nuclear war between India and Pakistan is we are far away. By the time fallout reaches the United States, its radioactivity will have been reduced by a factor somewhere between 100 and 1,000 times, making it far less dangerous. The citizens of countries immediately down wind, like China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, will have more to worry about.

For those who wish to know more about protecting themselves from fallout, I recommend reading Protect Yourself from Fallout. And if you hear that a nuclear weapon has gone off on the other side of the world, I recommend you don’t panic, which is the fist step in What to Do if Nuclear War Breaks Out.

As bad as nuclear war sounds, its much better when it happens far away. Our biggest danger is that it might increase the chances that another country uses nuclear weapons.
