Putin has warned that Ukraine will face retribution for the surprise attack on its bomber fleet. This should surprise no one, although the exact day and time remains an unknown, as does the form and extent of its attack. One can only assume it will be an escalation. The options are:
- A heavier campaign using more of the same weapons it has been using
- A heavy attack using different and more destructive weapons, such as the Oreshnik missile
- An attack on cities, military installations, energy infrastructure or other targets, in areas Russia has not yet targeted
- Any combination of the above
It does not appear that Putin is ready to strike at NATO targets outside of Ukraine, but I expect quite a few Ukrainians are sleeping in their bomb shelters.
