This article projects what could happen if rapidly rising inflation hits the food industry, affecting retailers, “suppliers, and so on, up the food chain.” The end result it predicts is that “Food riots would take place, first in inner cities then spread to other communities. Buyers, fearful of shortages, would clean out the shelves.” The author says this outcome is not speculation but “a historical pattern — a reaction based upon human nature whenever systemic inflation occurs.”

We saw some of this behavior during COVID when there were shortages. The lack of food was caused not by a lack of crops to harvest, but by a lack of people to do the harvesting, truck drivers to deliver it, processing capacity and packaging materials. When these companies fail due to high inflation or government price fixing, expect similar results.
