Harsh Weather Coming to Eastern U.S.

A cold, snowy city street.
Heavy rain will start in the South and turn to snow as it heads north over the next few days. Be prepared.

Harsh weather is heading up the East Coast over the next few days, starting in the South on Saturday with heavy rains turning to snow as it heads north.  We expect both, but since they don’t make a forecast for our location and altitude, we can’t be sure this soon; it might be mostly snow.  This means a potential power outage is in the cards.

My wife is making soup on Saturday so we can re-heat it on the wood stove if we lose power.  Because our wood stove is for heating the home, not cooking, we find one-pot meals work best when it is forced into service as a cook stove.  Of course, we can also heat hot water for coffee or tea.  We have a good amount of firewood in the house already, but we’ll top it off before the storm starts.

If the storm heads your way, play it safe and stay off the roads.  This is the time of year people get stranded on highways for hours, so make sure your vehicle survival kit is up to speed and includes warm clothes and bedding.

Looks like the EL Niño prediction of a wet winter might come true.  And the long-range forecast predicts “cold anomalies across much of the central, Southern and Eastern United States.”  So While Alaska and the Northwest might be warmer than usual, don’t expect the same in a good part of the lower 48.
