Consumers are looking for ways to cut back on spending, such as drinking the free coffee at the office instead of buying it at a coffee shop and dining out less. Consumer spending rose 1.1 percent in March, which sounds good, but inflation was up 1.2 percent for the month, meaning there was actually a slight decrease in purchases.
