Senators are Taking Precautions – Should you be Worried?

Senators are being outfitted with satellite communications in case of a "disruptive event."

More than 50 senators have been issued satellite phones “to ensure a redundant and secure means of communication during a disruptive event” or in case an emergency “takes out communications” in part of America. They are also being issued to Senators who travel internationally.

The article puts this in the context of being part of their personal security, but it sounds like there is more to this than improved door locks and panic buttons. My guess is that this is so key senators can be extricated and flown to a safe (read nuclear-proof) location in the event of an attack on American. If Washington, D.C., is targeted by Russian submarine launched ballistic missiles, for example, rescuing a senator at home in Michigan or New Mexico, or perhaps vacationing in the Caribbean might be an important part of the continuity of government plan. The satellite phone not only gives them a communication device, but no doubt allows rescuers to pinpoint their location.

This plan only works if the satellites remain in service. Its been argued that wiping out our satellites to blind and limit our communications might be one of the first things an adversary does before launching a nuclear attack.

Keep in mind that the government has no plans to rescue you or I in the event of a “disruptive event.” You have to prep for yourself.
