A Terrible Yet Effective Bombing Campaign

This article used satellite imagery to determine that up to 70 percent of the buildings in Gaza were damaged or destroyed by Israeli bombing and shelling. One expert said this was more than the U.S. and it allies damaged Dresden during WWII and it ranked in the “top 25 percent” of damaging bombing campaigns.

Sounds terrible, yet effective. 

This Israeli version of “shock and awe” could arguably be what has kept Hezbollah from invading Israel.  I expect it will make Israel’s other enemies also think twice. And it should show the Palestinian civilians on the ground that their government does not value them except as human shields.

Will this bombing change anything? On the short term, perhaps, but not in the long run. Memories fade and the lessons learned get dismissed. Israel will be attacked again, but their response might buy them some time.
