Outer Cover
A single-body beehive with its outer cover in place. This style of hive cover is called a telescoping lid and it slides down both sides of the hive. The metal top provides added weather protection and helps direct rain away from the hive body.

Step 8: Put on the Outer Cover

Also known as the outer lid, this piece will often have a layer of metal on top of it to provide added waterproofing and weather resistance to the hive.  It is slightly wider and longer than the hive body and slips over the inner lid and down over the top of the hive body on all four sides to provide a secure fit.

Many bee keepers put a brick or a large rock on top of the cover to keep the wind or a wild animal from accessing the hive.  Others use a ratchet strap to bind the whole thing together.  A heavy weight on top is a good idea if you have high winds. Ratchet straps have the added benefit of keeping the hive together should it be tipped over by strong winds or a bear.

There are other styles of both inner and outer lids, most of which are designed for the commercial beekeeper.  Use whichever style you want.
